Periodic Hydrography: A Tool for Accurate Sedimentation Rate Determination (Case Study: Nowshahr Port)
Naser Abdi *
Abstract:   (36 Views)
Nowshahr Port, with over 70 years of history, is one of the most important commercial ports in the Caspian Sea. This port, with its strategic location and advanced equipment, plays an important role in the development of maritime trade, exports, and transit to Central Asian and Eastern European countries. One of the main challenges of this port is the phenomenon of sedimentation in the entrance channel and basin, which can affect operational efficiency and dredging costs. Studying and analyzing the sedimentation rate in this area is essential for optimal management of port operations. In this study, the sedimentation process in Nowshahr Port was investigated using periodic bathymetry data over a period of one and a half years. The data used included periodic hydrographic data between 1401 and early 1403, which were analyzed to assess seabed changes and determine the accumulated sediment rate. The results showed that methods based on hydrographic observational data have higher accuracy compared to analytical methods. In this study, to calculate sediment and dredging volume, construction of triangulated irregular network (TIN) surface in Autodesk Civil 3D software, was used for primary and secondary dates. The results showed that the annual sedimentation rate in the Nowshahr Port basin is on average 0.38 m/year and in the inertance channel 0.81 m/year. These values are consistent with the results of numerical models and previous predictions in Nowshahr Port and confirm the importance of precise monitoring of seabed changes by hydrography. In addition, the effect of water level fluctuations on sedimentation rates was investigated using Pearson correlation coefficient. In the Nowshahr Port basin, the correlation was 0.81 and in the Nowshahr Port channel, it was 0.64, indicating that there is a significant relationship between the sedimentation rate in the Nowshahr Port basin and channel and the fluctuation of the Caspian Sea water level. These findings emphasize the importance of continuous monitoring and periodic hydrography for optimal management of dredging operations. Ultimately, the results of this study can help better plan for the maintenance and improvement of the performance of Nowshahr Port and provide solutions to reduce dredging costs and increase port productivity.
